“Don't let white guilt (expletive) up this comedy show.” So begins the opening volley of comedian Daryl Wright's upcoming CD, the appropriately named “Wildly Inappropriate. ” It’s wildly hilarious, too.

“What are you all still guilty about? Do any of you all still own slaves?” Wright asks, setting up a punch line targeting illegal immigrants, followed quickly by a tongue-in-cheek apology. “ I don't even know if I'm a racist or I'm just patriotic. I don't know any more. ”

A new room showcases the seedier side of stand-ups By Jane Borden

KILLER COMICS Wright and Quint, from left, are blunt about their records

Calling a comic’s performance an “act” implies that the individual is putting on a mask and, well, acting. And too often, green performers are advised to “find a stage persona,” suggesting they become someone else. It’s not surprising, then, to exit a club feeling unable to distinguish between the dozen jokers just herded across the stage. Insincerity is profoundly forgettable.

Maybe the audience had very high standards that night or perhaps the opening acts were not as funny as they were “supposed to be.” The host recited what seemed like a well-rehearsed monologue, eliciting only some nervous chuckles. The first act bounced all over the stage gaining only sporadic laughter. All in all, on this particular night, the Hollywood Improv comedy club was clearly missing the comedy in the club. The second act, LA-based Daryl Wright approached the stage and right away asked what the audiences’ problem was. After that opening line he served a much-needed ice-breaking, not to mention triumphant, performance to the once uptight room. Putting the relief back into comic relief.

By Ali Lerman Fri., Jul. 15 2011

Surviving a stint in jail and one with the Klan (Trust me, it's true), somehow Daryl Wright emerged as a talented and hilarious comic. Performing at clubs across America and most recently, as a feature comic on the Showtime Special Jon Lovitz Presents, Daryl's star is just starting to shine brighter than ever. You can catch up with this "up and coming" funny fan Saturday (July 16th) at the Irvine Improv as he opens for OC 's favorite Pablo Francisco and take in a double dose of fall on the floor funny that cannot be missed.
